Hot Start Nut Installation

The stock hot start nut is made of plastic and requires a 14mm open-end wrench to remove. The hot start cable needs to be removed when removing the carb from the bike. The Billet Hot Start Nut makes servicing the hot start or removing the hot start from the carb easy. NOTE: The design of the hot start nut featured in this How-To article has changed. Here's how to replace the stock nut with a billet version.

For the purposes of this How-To the carb was removed. However, it is possible to perform this hot start nut replacement while the carb is on the bike.

Remove the hot start cable rubber boot from the hot start nut. Unscrew the stock hot start nut using a 14mm wrench.

Once the hot start nut is loosened from the carb remove the hot start cable as shown below.

Remove the hot start plunger (brass part pictured) from the hot start cable. To do this compress the spring enough to rotate the plunger 90 degrees to remove the cable.

With the plunger and spring removed you can now remove the stock hot start nut from the hot start cable. Compare the billet hot start nut with the stock version. You can see the billet version has a 10mm nut making installing and removing the nut much easier. Also, being made from billet aluminum means it will not crack or break during use or maintenance. The CRF's Only Hot Start Nut also has a 10mm hex nut.

Install the billet hot start nut to the hot start cable. Install the spring and compress the spring to prepare to install the plunger.

Install the plunger at 90 degrees to the cable to secure it to the cable.

Straighten the plunger on the cable and make sure the spring is fully seated on the plunger and in the hot start nut as shown.

Coat the plunger with a light film of waterproof grease. This will help protect the plunger from corrosion. Thread the hot start nut and cable assembly to the carb.

Notice the rubber boot of the hot start cable is no seated to the hot start nut. This will make threading the hot start nut to the carb much easier.

Tighten the hot start nut using a 10mm wrench. Be careful not to over tighten the hot start nut. Just snug it up.

Install the rubber boot of the hot start cable. Failing to fully seat the rubber boot will cause the plunger to corrode.
